A student's music education should take place in a constructive and engaging environment that enables them to develop their skills, gain artistic appreciation and demonstrate curiosity. Students should be constantly challenged and are required to practice consistently to make progress.
I strive to accommodate students' needs while recognizing that every individual differs in capability, motor skills, learning styles, goals and communicative approaches.
My focus for piano students is to build a well rounded musical foundation at all levels, which I seek to establish through a blend of components, including:
For younger students, parental involvement is crucial and can make a world of difference in a child's musical development. Because of the intricate nature of learning the piano, parents should attend lessons, take notes, consistently adhere to a practice regimen with their child and aid in being a conduit between lessons and home practice. Here, a parent's attitude is also of utmost importance. Patience, optimism and encouragement will be necessary. Negative reinforcement such as punishment, withdrawing of toys, forcefulness or hostility is detrimental and will only make the child dislike the learning process.
To be successful in piano studies, it is necessary for piano students to have the following in their home:
Well-maintained acoustic piano in a quiet environment (hint: if it plugs into the wall, it is NOT acoustic!)
Adjustable bench (can be substituted by stacking cushions or books onto a bench)
Footstool and/or pedal extender
Theory students will be required to have the following materials and bring with them to every class:
Pencils, eraser, highlighter
Textbook and all other course material
A few sheets of manuscript paper
